May, 2012

Dear Friend:

Three weeks ago I shared with you some of my concerns about our Toronto Humane Society. You and I both want to help the animals who need us.

Imagine my disappointment, and I’m sure yours, when we received the response from the current President. Defensive, argumentative, and personal! Most of it was spent attacking me instead of outlining a vision for better animal care.

With so many mis-statements and exaggerations, I don’t know where to start. Let me just say this: The old complaints were rejected by both the courts and the Animal Care Review Board. The past is behind us.

The President has told you how wonderful things are under current leadership. Let me share with you what the insiders say. A secret report to the Board, not posted on the Society’s website, makes the following statements:
  • Board has broken its promises to you
  • A Board member repeatedly noticed many cats in pain
  • Animals lack necessities such as food and water
  • Employees who speak out fear reprisal
  • Sick animals placed in adoption
  • Cats recovering from surgery placed beside others showing symptoms of communicable disease
  • One cat had string, visible under its tongue, tangled in his intestines for two weeks
  • Another cat lingered in the shelter for 7 months

The President knew all this when she wrote you. Why did she not own up to this report, co-written by a current Board member, and presented to the Board?

This report is an example of the real issue, which is: How do we move ahead and provide better care for the animals in our shelter?

I know, from my conversations with members that we want to put the rancour and divisiveness behind us. I know too, that many members who may not have supported us in the past share our concerns.

That’s why a group has come together as the “Animals First Team” to help provide a new and better direction for our Society as candidates for the Board.  I am enclosing brief biographies of these members. They are a team of seasoned and knowledgeable veterans and enthusiastic newcomers.

Together we will work to:
  • provide emergency services 24/7 at our current location
  • implement a lost and found program
  • establish a free admissions policy for all animals
  • put uniformed Society rescue officers on the streets

Let’s all of us – members, staff and volunteers – work together once again. As individuals we can each make a small difference. As a team we can, and will, build a Toronto Humane Society that is a beacon of hope for the most needy and vulnerable.

I enclose a proxy if you can’t attend the upcoming AGM on May 29th, 2012. Please sign and return the proxy as soon as possible to make your voice count.

Thank you for your support.

Yours truly,

Tim Trow

PS:   Please remember to send in your proxy today in the stamped, addressed envelope provided.
The animals need us more than ever.
